Licensure in the United States is a state affair, NCEES merely builds the exam, and the eligibility rules live in fifty-plus board rulebooks that follow the same national pattern while differing in the details. The good news is that the pattern is simple, and the details are checkable in an afternoon. This guide lays out the PE exam requirements: the three national pillars, how each one flexes by state, the decoupling rules that changed when you can test, and the paths for candidates whose degrees don't fit the standard mold.

    What are the PE exam requirements?

    The standard PE exam requirements are three: a four-year engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program, a passing result on the FE exam (the EIT milestone), and roughly four years of progressive engineering experience — with your state licensing board owning the exact numbers and exceptions. Everything else is a variation on those pillars.

    The education requirement

    The benchmark is a bachelor's degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET's Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), which satisfies the education requirement in every state — and most states also provide alternate paths with additional experience years for non-ABET and engineering-technology degrees. Accreditation is the standard, not the only door.

    For the typical US engineering graduate, this pillar is settled at commencement: EAC/ABET accreditation covers the overwhelming majority of American engineering programs, and your degree either has it or it does not (the ABET program finder answers in seconds). The interesting cases are the exceptions. Engineering technology graduates and holders of related-science degrees can qualify in many states by substituting additional experience years — commonly two to four more than the standard. And internationally educated engineers have a defined route: NCEES offers a Credentials Evaluations service that compares foreign degrees against the accreditation standard, and many boards require exactly that evaluation as the first step.     The FE exam and EIT requirement

    In most states, a passing FE exam result — and the EIT or EI designation built on it — is the prerequisite for PE exam approval, and the narrow exceptions (FE waivers for engineers with very long experience) are shrinking, not growing. For nearly everyone, the FE is the non-negotiable first exam.

    The experience requirement (and decoupling)

    The standard is approximately four years of progressive engineering experience, gained under the supervision of licensed engineers who can verify it — and "decoupling," now adopted by many states, lets you sit the PE exam before those years finish, while the license itself still waits for them. The experience requirement never disappeared; it just stopped blocking the exam date.

    Two words in the standard carry the weight. Progressive means growing responsibility: boards want to see a trajectory from supervised tasks toward independent judgment, not four years of the same assignment repeated. Verifiable means your supervising PEs (and in some states, additional references) will attest to the work, which is why the habit of logging projects, roles, and supervisors from your first EIT week pays off at application time. As for decoupling: where adopted, it changes when you can test, letting well-prepared candidates take the exam when their preparation peaks rather than waiting for the experience paperwork to finish, but the license still requires both the passing result and the completed, verified experience. Boards differ on all of it — the years, the counting rules, the decoupling itself — which brings us to the only universally correct instruction.

    How to check your state's exact requirements

    Your state licensing board's website is the single authority on your PE eligibility, and the reliable workflow is: read your board's requirements page, confirm against the NCEES licensure overview, and contact the board directly for anything ambiguous. An hour of verification beats a rejected application by months.

    The variation is not hypothetical. New York's board publishes its own requirements with distinct experience rules; California adds state-specific exams for civil engineers; some states demand references in specific formats or applications months before the exam window.
