Ask a recent FE taker about the exam and somewhere in the first minute they will mention a question that made them drag labels onto a diagram, or type a number into a blank box with no choices to lean on. Candidates who walked in expecting four tidy bubbles per question meet those formats for the first time under the clock, and the surprise costs more than the questions themselves. This guide covers the FE exam format completely: how much is multiple choice, what the alternative item types look like, how many questions you face, how the two sections flow, and whether everyone really gets the same exam.

Mostly, yes: the majority of FE exam questions are traditional multiple choice with four options — but the computer-based exam also uses four alternative item types, and every question, whatever its format, is scored right-or-wrong with no partial credit. Expecting a pure bubble exam is the format's most common surprise.
The composition reflects what the exam is trying to measure. Traditional multiple choice tests recognition efficiently, but some engineering skills — reading a diagram, ranking steps in a procedure, producing a numeric answer without hints — are tested more honestly by other formats, and the computer-based platform makes them practical. So NCEES blends them: the familiar four-option questions carry most of the exam, and the alternative item types (AITs) appear throughout, unannounced, exactly like any other question.
For preparation, the blend means one thing above all: your practice should include every format. A candidate who has only ever bubbled A-through-D develops habits (eliminate two, guess between two) that simply do not transfer to a fill-in-the-blank question, and discovers that under time pressure. The FE exam has 110 questions, presented in two sections of roughly 55 questions each, with an optional 25-minute break between them. All seven FE disciplines use the same count and structure; only the topics differ.
Two more numbers complete the picture. Second, the topics: how the 110 questions are divided across knowledge areas is defined by your discipline's exam specification, and the official NCEES FE page lists the question range for each area (for example, 8 to 12 mathematics questions on FE Civil).
There is one detail worth knowing about the question count: a small number of the 110 questions are pretest items, which are new questions NCEES is testing for future exams. These questions are mixed in with the rest, they look exactly like the scored questions, and they do not count toward your result. The best approach is to treat every question as real: if one seems impossible, answer it anyway and move on. It may simply have been a pretest question that will never affect your score.

The FE exam's alternative item types are multiple-correct questions, point-and-click questions, drag-and-drop questions, and fill-in-the-blank questions, all scored the same way as the standard multiple-choice questions. Knowing how each behaves makes them far less intimidating.

The no-partial-credit rule deserves emphasis because it shapes strategy on the two composite formats. A multiple-correct question with three right selections out of your four attempts scores zero, exactly like an untouched question; a drag-and-drop with one transposition scores zero. That is not a reason to fear them; it is a reason to slow down for a few extra seconds on precisely these formats, verify before submitting, and use the time saved on the standard multiple-choice questions that make up most of the exam. On screen, the exam runs as two sequential sections with flagging and review inside each: you can revisit any question within your current section, but once you submit the first section and take the break, it locks permanently. The interface also carries your two constant companions, the Reference Handbook and an onscreen calculator.
Walk through the experience in order. After the 2-minute nondisclosure agreement and an 8-minute tutorial, section one opens: roughly 55 questions you can answer, flag, skip, and revisit freely. When you submit it, the optional break is offered, and section two behaves identically. Throughout both, the searchable FE Reference Handbook sits beside your questions on the 24-inch monitor, and an onscreen TI-30XS backs up your own approved calculator.
The one-way door between sections is the flow's only strategic trap. Candidates who rush section one to "bank time" and later remember a question they wanted to rework discover there is no going back; the flag-and-review discipline has to complete within each section. Rehearse exactly that rhythm in your practice simulations and the interface becomes furniture, which is what it should be.
No — each candidate receives a unique set of questions assembled by NCEES's delivery algorithm, but every set is built to the same specification, covers the same knowledge areas in the same proportions, and is equated to the same difficulty standard. Your exam is different from your neighbor's and worth exactly as much.
This is the linear-on-the-fly (LOFT) model NCEES uses for its year-round exams. The question bank is large; the algorithm draws each candidate's 110 questions so that the blueprint — the specification's topic proportions — holds for everyone, and the scoring conversion adjusts for the small difficulty differences between draws. The design solves the obvious problem with a year-round exam (yesterday's takers describing today's questions) without sacrificing fairness, since no one's draw can be systematically harder once equating is applied.
For candidates, LOFT means two practical things. First, when someone on a forum says "my exam was full of statics," they are describing the particular set of questions they happened to receive; your exam will draw a different set, so the reliable guide to what you will face is your discipline's exam specification, not other candidates' stories. Second, there is no need to worry about receiving a harder version than someone else, because the scaled scoring accounts for differences between question sets. Format fluency comes from rehearsal: practice with all five question formats, under time, in two-section blocks, with the handbook and calculator you will actually use. Candidates who do this report the real exam feels procedurally identical to their final practice week — which is the entire point.
