Mechanical engineers have a complicated relationship with licensure: half the profession works happily in industry roles where nobody asks for a PE, and the other half discovers, somewhere around year five, that the promotion, the consulting move, or the signing authority they want has a license requirement attached. The FE Mechanical exam is where that second story starts, and it happens to be the FE discipline candidates pass at the highest rate. This guide covers the FE Mechanical exam in full: the format, all 14 knowledge areas with their question counts, where the weight sits, whether you actually need it, and how to prepare efficiently.

The FE Mechanical exam is the mechanical-discipline version of the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam: 110 questions over 5 hours and 20 minutes, computer-based, offered year-round at Pearson test centers for a $225 fee. Passing it earns the EIT designation and opens the road to the mechanical PE license.
Structurally it is identical to every FE discipline: the two-section format with an optional break, multiple choice plus alternative item types, the onscreen FE Reference Handbook as your only reference, and an approved calculator at the desk. What defines FE Mechanical is its topic list, which reads like a mechanical engineering degree's core sequence — and that resemblance, as we will see, is exactly why its candidates outperform every other discipline.
By the numbers, it is the second-largest FE exam: 11,552 first-time candidates in NCEES's latest reporting year, behind only FE Civil. The two exams make an instructive pair — civil's enormous, varied pool posts the lowest pass rate while mechanical's tightly-matched pool posts the highest, and the difference is the population, not the difficulty.

Two features of this blueprint deserve attention before you plan anything. First, the mechanical core dominates: unlike FE Civil, where a third of the exam is shared fundamentals, FE Mechanical's heaviest question counts come from discipline material through and through. Second, the one area that routinely catches candidates off guard is Electricity and Magnetism (5 to 8 questions), a course most mechanical engineers took early in their degree and have not used since. Four areas top the FE Mechanical exam at 10 to 15 questions each — Dynamics, Kinematics, and Vibrations; Fluid Mechanics; Thermodynamics; and Mechanical Design and Analysis — with Statics and Mechanics of Materials close behind at 9 to 14. Together, those six areas can supply well over half of your 110 questions.
That concentration is the central strategic fact of this exam. The six heavy areas are the mechanical curriculum's spine, which cuts two ways: recent graduates find most of the exam familiar, and any weakness in a spine subject is expensive in a way no small-area weakness can be. The efficient plan gives those six areas first claim on study time and practice volume, runs the four thermofluids-adjacent areas (fluids, thermo, heat transfer, and their measurement cousins) as one connected block since their concepts chain together in questions, and schedules a deliberate revival week for Electricity and Magnetism rather than hoping it stays away. The small areas — economics, ethics, statistics — round out coverage with efficient review passes, and with no penalty for wrong answers, every one of their questions stays worth fighting for.
No law requires a mechanical engineer to take the FE exam to work in industry — but it is the mandatory first exam for the PE license, and the mechanical careers that need a PE (consulting, HVAC design, energy, expert work, government) are hard to enter without it. The honest question is not "must I?" but "will I ever want the option?"
Here is the fair picture. Large sectors of mechanical employment (automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, product design) operate under the industrial exemption, where companies rather than individual engineers hold responsibility, and plenty of excellent careers never touch licensure. But the licensed lanes are real and lucrative: building-systems and HVAC design firms need PEs to seal drawings, energy and utilities work leans licensed, consulting rates reflect the stamp, and government roles often require it. The trap is timing: the engineer who decides at 30 that consulting looks attractive faces the FE a decade from coursework, when pass rates drop sharply, while the senior who takes it before graduation banks the option at its statistical peak, for $225. The FE Mechanical pass rate is 69% for first-time takers, per NCEES Squared 2025 — the highest of any FE discipline — rising to 72% for candidates with EAC/ABET-accredited engineering degrees, and falling to 37% for repeat takers. The high rate reflects a well-matched candidate pool rather than an easier exam.
Why does mechanical lead the table? Its population is the most homogeneous in the FE system: overwhelmingly mechanical engineering graduates whose core courses map one-to-one onto the exam's heaviest areas. Where FE Civil's broad pool drags its average down, FE Mechanical's tight match pushes its average up — same exam machinery, different demographics. The cautions travel unchanged, though: the repeat-taker rate of 37% is barely half the first-time figure, and the take-it-early effect (roughly 71% before graduation versus 63% beyond a year out) applies to mechanical candidates exactly as it does to everyone. A high average is not a personal guarantee; it is a favorable starting position that preparation converts.
Prepare for FE Mechanical with the standard four-step method — specification first, diagnostic early, handbook fluency throughout, timed simulations last — weighted to the six-area mechanical spine and with a deliberate Electricity and Magnetism revival. For recent graduates, 8 to 12 weeks is a comfortable runway.

It has the highest pass rate, but that reflects its candidate pool — mostly mechanical graduates whose coursework maps tightly onto the exam — rather than easier questions. The exam itself is as rigorous as any FE discipline.
Not to work in industry, where the industrial exemption covers most roles. It is required for the PE license, which consulting, HVAC design, energy, and government careers commonly demand — and it is statistically easiest right at graduation, which is the argument for taking it early regardless.
The standard NCEES policy: Casio fx-115 and fx-991 models, HP 33s and 35s, and TI-30X and TI-36X models, with an onscreen TI-30XS provided as backup. Graphing calculators are banned.
As close to graduation as possible: NCEES data shows first-time pass rates of about 71% before graduation versus 63% more than a year after. The exam covers your core coursework, and that knowledge fades faster than anyone expects.
